Charming villages in the Dordogne
In the Dordogne, you’ll find many picturesque villages. They are often composed of just a few streets and alleys. They are all well maintained, flowery and charming. You will certainly enjoy strolling on our beautiful summer days. In most cases, it is possible to have a drink or snack.
It’s impossible to name them all, but, to whet your appetite, allow us to introduce you to some of our nearby villages.
The beautiful village of Cadouin with its imposing Romanesque church and the Cistercian abbey, listed as World Heritage by UNESCO, is situated 5 km east of Molières.
Visit the cloister, a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic art (15th century), take a walk through the gate Saint Louis (12th century) and rest in the shade, under the 15th century market hall.
5 km south of Molières you will find Saint Avit Sénieur. In the 6th century a hermit named Avitus lived here. He was canonized and gave his name to the village. Saint Avit Sénieur was, like Cadouin, on the pilgrimage route to Compostela.
There are some buildings of the old abbey and especially the abbey church, classified World Heritage by UNESCO. The north tower of the church is partially destroyed. This is a “memory” of the time of the wars of religion where the Huguenots set fire to the church in 1577.
About 10 km south-west of our village you will find Beaumont-du-Perigord. This village has retained all its charm. Admire its impressive fortified 13th century church and take a walk through the narrow streets, the Luzier gate and the ramparts.
A local market is held in the square every Tuesday morning. In July and August there is a gourmet night market every Monday night.
A little further on, about 22 km south of Molières, you will find Monpazier, labelled “One of the Most Beautiful Villages in France”, and one of the most beautiful bastides, if you ask our opinion. This village is not to be missed! A little more touristic than the others, but beautiful and always as pleasant.
You can visit the “Bastideum” where you will be immersed in the history of the bastides and discover the architecture and life in these new cities of the Middle Ages.
