Places of charm, not to be missed

Home » Discover the Dordogne » Places of charm in the Dordogne

It is decidedly impossible to talk about all the beautiful things to visit in the Dordogne! There is really something for all tastes and ages.

After the prehistoric sites, castles and villages, we would like to introduce some other places. Discover with us these places both full of charm and sometimes even a little unusual.

At the “Caves of Maxange”, in Le Buisson-de-Cadouin, 12 km north-east of Molières, you will discover a fairy show of eccentric concretions unique in the world. Unlike conventional stalactites and stalagmites, these geological crystallizations seem to defy the laws of gravity.

In addition, the story of their discovery is absolutely extraordinary!

This site is classified National Heritage as of 2013 and was awarded 2 stars in the Michelin Guide.

Come and admire this masterpiece of nature!

In the park of the Château de Marqueyssac, you will discover not only beautifully landscaped gardens with 150,000 hand-cut box trees, but also more than 6 kilometers of shaded walks, rock gardens, waterfalls, huts and playgrounds for the little ones. The “Belvédère”, 130m above the river, unfolds the most beautiful panorama of the Perigord.

A visit to make with the family, even if you have teens … who moan every time you offer them a visit! Because in summer, the Gardens of Marqueyssac invite families to live an out of the ordinary adventure: dare Via Ferrata *, which is installed along the cliffs overlooking the Dordogne. You will be suspended – safely – more than 100m above the river. A unique experience !

You will also be able to take the net-stroll, a journey of 100m accomplished at 5m above the ground level. Children aged 6 years and older will certainly appreciate the initiation into climbing. Plus, all this is included in the price of the entrance ticket which is even free for children under 10!

You will find the Gardens of Marqueyssac between Beynac and Castelnaud, 38km east from our village.

* minimum age of children for Via Ferrata: 8 years, accompaniment by a parent is mandatory.

Find yourself in the Perigordian village atmosphere of 1900 in the Village of Le Bournat, in Le Bugue, 20 km nord-east from Molières!

Authentic buildings, fully restored according to the techniques of the time, traditional crafts, quality craftsmen, an authentic carnival as in the good old days, animals from the farm: enough to make the hearts of big and small beat.

These cabins, also called “bories”, are built according to ancestral techniques. They are small round houses with a stone (“lauze”) roof crafted by stacking of dry stones without the use of mortar or any other binder to hold the whole together.

Since 1949, the “Cabanes du Breuil” have been part of a still active 15 hectare farm. Several generations of the same family of owners take care of and restore them with love and patience. The geese and other farm animals will accompany you throughout your visit, to the delight of children (and adults …).

Do as we do and let yourself be charmed by this unusual place!

The “Cabanes du Breuil” are located a few kilometres from the “Château de Commarque”, on the road between Les Eyzies and Sarlat, 40 km to the north-east of our village.

So go ahead, go on a trip of discovery and come back with a head full of wonderful images!
